U2opia, a Singapore-based software applications developer, has developed a technology which allows users to access Facebook without GPRS connection. The technology works on any handset. The technology is called Unstructured Supplementary Data (USSD). This technology is used by telecom service providers to give service alerts after say a user makes a call or uses GPRS service. It is also used to provide menu based services to users.
The USSD technology is the same which is used to provide user alerts such as Balance updates at the end of calls, Flash messages etc. The Application has been developed keeping in mind the slow penetration of smartphones through out India. The service will suit best to Low End Phones which do not have Smartphone Capabilities. Though you will not be able to view graphics and videos. It is similar to text message service so having negligible load on the Network.
Airtel customers can update their Facebook status through this service free of cost, But customer will have to pay Rs 1 per day for accessing all the features, which enables viewing news feeds, commenting on or liking news feed stories, posting on friends’ walls, confirming friend requests, viewing notifications and finding as well as adding friends.
Airtel users can dial *325# and *fbk# for non-qwerty mobile handsets to access Facebook without subscribing to data plans !
